The City of Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Program

The city of Toronto has implemented a basement flooding protection program. The program aims to prevent basement flooding by making improvements to the city’s infrastructure. The program has specific criteria based on climate change, and is expected to save billions of dollars in insured losses. Among other things, it provides residents with the necessary tools to protect themselves from basement flooding. But despite all the benefits, there are still some risks associated with this program.

The City of Toronto has recognized that the frequency of storms has increased in recent years. This has led to an unsustainable amount of pressure on its stormwater infrastructure. As a result, many home and business owners in the city have experienced flooding in their basements, causing property damage and disrupting their ability to do business. This has led to the creation of the Basement Flooding Protection Program (BFPP), which aims to address these issues by improving the city’s sewer system and implementing flood protection measures.

Although many neighbourhoods in Toronto have experienced chronic flooding, the program aims to make the city’s infrastructure more resilient to the threat. It is designed to protect the basements of residents by installing a backwater valve and installing a sump pump. However, there are exceptions to the requirements, and a plumber should be hired to determine whether your home is prone to flooding. The city of Toronto has declined 99% of damage claims in the past.
